Ivan Goldstein

Ivan GoldsteinIvan Goldstein, a native Denverite, businessman and artist, passed away April 28, 2015, in Jerusalem. He was 90 years old. The funeral service took place at Har HaMenuchot Cemetery in Jerusalem.

“”Ivan was well known for his generous spirit, his easygoing manner and his wonderful sense of humor,”” the family said.

Mr. Goldstein was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Denver to the late Max and Ida Goldstein. He had two brothers, Jerome and Max.

He attended Teller Elementary School and graduated from East High.

In 1943, Mr. Goldstein entered the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) in engineering at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Due to the need for more soldiers in Europe, the military shut down the ASTP program.

Mr. Goldstein was sent to Camp Cook, Calif., and assigned to Company B, 41st Tank Battalion, 11th Army Division. Sent overseas and deployed in France, he was assigned to the US Third Army commanded by Gen. George Patton.

Captured in the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 31, 1944, he remained a POW until he was liberated three months later on Passover, 1945.

Mr. Goldstein returned to Denver to recuperate at Fitzsimons Army Hospital.

He then enrolled in the fine arts program at DU, where he met his future wife, June Joy Alexander. June was president of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority and Mr. Goldstein was president of the Phi Sigma Delta Fraternity. The couple established DU’s first Hillel chapter.

They were married on July 11, 1948, and raised four children.

Mr. Goldstein served as president of both EDOS and Hillel Academy. In addition, he chaired many committees and fundraising efforts and was commander of the Jewish War Veterans in Jerusalem.

He started the Advertising Display Company, a designer and producer of screen-printed signage, point-of-purchase displays and promotional advertising materials serving local and national advertising agencies.

Mr. Goldstein loved playing handball, racquetball, tennis and golf.

The Goldsteins moved to Israel 31 years ago and made their home in Jerusalem.

Mrs. Goldstein, Ivan’s beloved wife of almost 66 years, predeceased him 13 months earlier, in 2014.

Mr. Goldstein is survived by his children Michael Goldstein, Daniel (Jill) Goldstein, Judy (Alan) Schreiber of Denver and David (Elisa) Goldstein of Jerusalem; sisters-in-law Barbara Goldstein of Jerusalem, Joan Brown of Denver and Jill (Louis) Laviage of Houston; 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
