Shirley Sorkin

Shirley SorkinShirley Sorkin, whose sparkling humor and genuine compassion endeared her to everyone, passed away Aug. 8, 2010, in Denver.

Rabbi Richard Rheins officiated at the graveside service, held Aug. 10 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

A memorial service also took place Aug. 11 at Shalom Park.

“If she didn’t know you, she knew someone else who did,” said her son Dr. Marc Sorkin.


Mrs. Sorkin was born Sept. 15, 1927, in Omaha, Neb.

She graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Shirley Belzer married Albert Sorkin in February of 1948.

Executive secretary to the rabbi at Beth Israel Synagogue in Omaha, Neb., for many years, she gained remarkable insight into temple operations.

The Sorkins moved to Denver in 1993 to be closer to their grandchildren.

They joined Temple Sinai immediately upon their arrival and became active members of the synagogue.

Instrumental in starting the cooking group “Sisters of the Skillet” to preserve family recipes, Mrs. Sorkin was a great hostess, an incredible baker and a wonderful friend.

She is survived by her husband Albert Sorkin; her son Dr. Marc (Laurie) Sorkin; grandchildren Adam, Alison and Jonathan Sorkin; and her brother Dr. Edward  Belzer.
