Alan Markson

Alan MarksonAlan Charles Markson, who was honored at Rodef Shalom’s annual dinner in 2010, passed away Feb. 9, 2011, in Denver.  Rabbi Bernard Gerson and Cantor Saul Rosenthal officiated at the Feb. 11 graveside service at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“Every other word is a tear,” daughter Peggy Kappy said at the service. “A tear of remembering the pleasures you enjoyed, and the pleasures you gave.

 

“You spared us the long goodbye of your memory loss and confusion, and graced us by parting on Mom’s birthday. You remembered.”

 

Mr. Markson was born June 19, 1927, in Brooklyn, NY. In 1943, 10 days after his 16th birthday, he entered the University of Virginia and graduated with an engineering degree.

After serving with the US Army Air Force in Washington, DC,  Mr. Markson moved to Denver in 1948.

He married Helen Vera Epstein, whom he met during a picnic for Jewish servicemen, on Aug. 29, 1948.

Mrs. Markson passed away on March 28, 2005.

In 1950, he earned a business degree from DU.

Mr. Markson, along with his brother-in-law Iz Kozatch, owned Franklin Furniture and the Carpet Store. He retired in 2009.

A supporter of causes that benefitted children’s health and education, Mr. Markson volunteered throughout the Denver community.

He belonged to the Better Business Bureau board for four years, twice chaired the Yeshiva Toras Chaim dinner and raised funds for the federation.
Rodef Shalom honored him last year for his many contributions to the synagogue.

Mr. Markson is survived by his children Peggy (Dr. Michael) Kappy and Dr. Jay (Martha) Markson of Denver; brothers Robert (Charlotte) Markson of Chicago and Richard (Marcy) Markson of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Harris and Jack Markson; and brother-in-law Isadore Kozatch and sisters-in-law Shirley Epstein, Judy Epstein and Joan Epstein.
