Burton Leiser

Burton M. Leiser, a professor at several colleges and universities, passed away Nov. 19, 2009, in Briarcliff Manor, NY. The service was held Nov. 12 at Sharon Gardens Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.

“He relished life,” his family said. “He traveled extensively and gave generously of his time, energy, talent and spirit to family, friends and causes in which he believed.”

Mr. Leiser was born Dec. 12, 1930, in Denver. He lived here until 1948.

After receiving his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, he earned his MA in Hebrew literature from Yeshiva University, an MA in philosophy from New York University, a PhD in philosophy from Brown University and his JD from Drake University.

Mr. Leiser was a professor at Ft. Lewis College in Durango; Buffalo State in Buffalo, NY; Sir George Williams in Montreal; Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; and Pace University in New York.

He retired from teaching in 2001.

Mr. Leiser is survived by his wife Janet A. Johnson; children Shoshana, Illana and Phillip (Karen) Leiser; stepdaughter Sheri Johnson (Richard) Phelps; grandchildren Ariel and Naomi Leiser and Maya Ethenish Phelps; and siblings Gerald (Shelley) Leiser and Deanne (William) Conte.
