Hassan Nasrallah, head of Hezbollah, deemed a terrorist organization by the EU and the US, says that removing Israel “is a Lebanese national interest.” Defiant words, cowardly actions — he speaks after months in hiding.
Actually, it is the removal of the Palestinian internment camps in Lebanon that is a Lebanese national interest. In Nasrallah’s theoretical love for Palestinians, which parallels his real hatred of Israelis, he says: “The Palestine we mean is a Palestine which stretches from the [Mediterranean] Sea to the [Jordan] River and it should be returned to its rightful owners.”
That is, to him and his friends like the Syrians who are killing their people by the tens of thousands.
The sporadic patriotism for the Palestinian cause that rises intermittently from Lebanon and other places (such as Jordan) that treat Palestinians as second-rate citizens is beyond absurd. It’s like saying, “I love my mother, but I keep her locked in the house and dress her in rags and keep her away from the family — to avoid embarrassment.”
If that’s love, we’ll take the hate. It gives us an undisguised, obvious target that’s much easier to hit.
