The US House of Representatives has passed a war powers resolution (H.J. Res. 37) that seeks to end American military support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.
Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO), an original co-sponsor of the resolution, introduced an amendment to the resolution to keep US intelligence sharing agreements in place, which passed the House with bipartisan support and was included in the final measure.
“Congress has allowed presidents, whether Democrat or Republican, to engage in war without a declaration,” Buck said. “That is not what our Constitution requires, and I believe our men and women in military deserve better.”
He said he co-sponsored H.J. Res. 37 “because I strongly believe Congress needs to reassert itself. At the same time, I saw the need for improvements to this resolution, which is why I offered an amendment to ensure intelligence sharing with foreign countries may continue.
“Today, I was glad to see my colleagues on both sides of the aisle support my amendment, which was ultimately adopted and included in the final resolution.”
