Sylvia Mirrop, 90, who worked as a nurse’s aide and in other medical fields for the US Army for nearly 50 years, died May 6, 2021, in El Paso, Texas. Rabbi Ben Zeidman officiated at the May 9 service at Temple Mount Cemetery, El Paso. Sunset Funeral Home made the arrangements.

“After retirement, Nana received a Civilian Service Commendation Medal from the Dept. of the Army for her 47 years of service,” the family said. “Her coworkers enjoyed working with her and treated her like a member of their family.”

Mrs. Mirrop was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Manhattan to Harry and Rose Pearl, who emigrated from Poland in the early 1920s. She grew up the Bronx.

A graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High, she then attended City College in the Bronx, where she met Burton Mirrop at a Jewish War veteran’s dance.

They married on May 19, 1951, moved to El Paso in 1954 and had three children.

When the marriage ended, Mrs. Mirrop went to nursing school at the University of Texas-El Paso and trained as a nurse’s aide.

She worked night jobs at Thomason General Hospital before being hired at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in 1973. After 20 years, she transferred to medical records, retiring at age 89.

Mrs. Mirrop was a member of the Fort Bliss Jewish Chapel for over 50 years, although no one in the family was in the military.

“Nana was a kind, hard-working shining light that we will all miss,” her family said.

Sylvia Mirrop is survived by her children Cheryl Mirrop of Denver, Mindy Dember of El Paso and Samuel (Barbara) Mirrop of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Joshua Portuondo-Dember, Brandan Dember and Anne Mirrop; and sisters Shirley Futlick and Ellen Gabehart.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
