Mark Howard Levine, 77, of Englewood, Colorado, passed away on October 14, 2026, after enduring a long illness. He was born on October 3, 1949, to Bernard and Rebecca Levine in Boston, Massachusetts.
He is remembered as a wonderfully gregarious and curious person, whose quick wit and infectious (if sometimes wicked) sense of humor brought warmth and laughter to all. He was a man of faith, committed to mitzvot and to serving his community, demonstrating Jewish values through a lifetime of generosity and devotion to others. His genuine interest in people and care for the world around him have left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to have known him.
A first-generation college graduate, Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from American University in 1971. While a student, he was an active member and president of the Beta Beta chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi (later Zeta Beta Tau) fraternity. Upon graduating, Mark worked as a kindergarten teacher in the National Teacher Corps program, supporting the early education needs of low-income students in rural Virginia. His work in Teacher Corps inspired his interest in broadening access to education in public schools. The experience eventually led him to earn a Ph.D. in early childhood development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While attending UIUC, Mark met his wife of 46 years, Victoria Levine (née Lindsay). After marrying, Mark and Vicki first moved to Rochester, NY, where their son Scott was born, and then to Colorado Springs, CO, where they had their daughter Elizabeth.
Outside of education, Mark served the Colorado Springs Jewish community as a board member at Temple Shalom, where his family were members for more than 20 years. He took a special interest in both the Social Action Committee and Men’s Club. Mark and his family were regular fixtures on Saturday mornings. Upon retirement in 2019, Mark and Vicki moved to Englewood, CO, continuing their Jewish life at Temple Sinai of Denver. His service to the Jewish community was one of the most fulfilling aspects of his life.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, beloved aunt and uncle Betty and Joe Lass, brother-in-law Douglas Stow, and brother and sister-in-law David and Suzan Foreman. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; son Scott Levine of Glenwood Springs, CO (daughter Isabelle); daughter Elizabeth Levine of Englewood, CO (husband Geoffrey York); sister, Marcia Levine of Hallandale Beach, FL; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Stow and Kathryn Stephens (husband Charles). A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mark’s memory can be made to Temple Shalom (Colorado Springs) or Temple Sinai (Denver).
Paid obituary, prepared by the family.
