During the Bush junior administration, the United States would act unilaterally if we could not find allies to act with us. Obama requires a multilateral coalition as a precondition of action. This is not necessarily a Republican/Democrat thing. Bush senior did not take out Saddam in 1991 because our allies in the Gulf War were not willing to support that action.

The Arabs now maintain that peace with Israel is the necessary first step in the Middle East and they refuse to join Obama’s multi-national coalition unless Obama accepts that premise. Acquiescing, Obama requires progress in the peace process between Israel and Palestinians as a precondition of the US taking action regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities.. This places Israel in a peculiar bind.

Problem 1: Iran funds the Palestinians. The Palestinians need Iran’s permission to make peace with Israel, or they face a critical loss of revenue.

Problem 2: The more unrest Iran creates, the weaker the US looks, and so the stronger Iran looks.

Problem 3: If Iran requires the Palestinians to make outrageous demands, there will be no progress, there will be no multinational coalition, and Obama will leave Iran alone. If Iran does not require outrageous demands, there will be progress, there will be a multinational coalition against Iran, and so Obama will pressure Iran. (See Problem 2. Guess what Iran will do.)

Problem 4: Israel cannot make peace with the Palestinians unless the Palestinians make peace with Israel. (Go back to Problem 1.)

Iran is paying the Palestinians bupkas to make war on Israel and the Obama just promised to do nothing to stop Iran as long as the Palestinians keep making trouble. The US will look weak, Iran will look strong, and rogue states like Venezuela will look to Iran for leadership. The Iranians will be happy with Ahmadinejad because Iran will gain international prestige, the war will not cost much, there will be no war damage inside Iran, and there will be no Iranian deaths. With Obama’s help, Ahmadinejad will be in power for a long time.

The media can blame Israel for world unrest and for a nuclear Iran. (Just like the good old days, blame everything on the Jews.)
