Despite meltdown, Rockies deserve gratitude

OK. The last play-off game with Philadelphia was a classic, bottom-of-the-ninth, two-out disaster. The comeback Rockies heroics of the eighth inning went to waste in a vortex of pain in the ninth. But. . . a little perspective, please.

The Rockies gave us a great year. They came back from the dead in June, and came back again and again in game after game. They developed a pitching staff worthy of the name for the first time in their history. They gave us Jim Tracy, who still deserves to be named manager of the year; they gave us another great year by Todd Helton, another season of spectacular moves by Troy Tulowitzki, wondrous newcomers in Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez, and still more surprises, such as the unpredictable bat of catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

And remember, they did all this while sustaining major injuries throughout the year. Pitching ace Aaron Cook was out for a couple of months. Tulowitzki and others lost some major time, too, but the Rockies kept going just the same.

We’re pleased we’re not in goat Houston Street’s shoes right now, but he too had a great year. The best testimony to the Rockies is that so many fans are looking forward to next year. Colorado Rockies — thank you.
