November, there have been four special Congressional elections pitting a Republican against a Democrat. The hype was that these would be referenda on Donald Trump, with the implication that many voters are angry about Trump’s election and, if given the chance, will say so these special elections. If these were referenda on Donald Trump, they have failed, because Jon Ossoff’s loss in Georgia brings the Democratic victories in these four elections to a total of zero. (April’s special election in California was between two Democratic candidates.) I do, however, think these were referenda; not on Donald Trump himself, but on the obsession that the Democratic Party and many news outlets have with Donald Trump.
