Marilyn Shames

Marilyn Shames, wife of the late Motty Shames and the oldest surviving member of the Denver-based Shames clan, passed away at her home in Jerusalem on Jan. 4, 2020. She was 89. Services were held Jan. 4 in Jerusalem.

“Marilyn is remembered as a rock of stability and good cheer whose home was always open with chocolate chip cookies for one and all,” her family said. “She had many dear friends on both sides of the ocean.”

Mrs. Shames was born Sept. 26, 1930 in Denver to Ben and Pearl Altman. She attended North High and CU.

Marilyn, also known as “Gullie,” married Motty Shames on Jan. 27, 1952.

Founding members of EDOS, they educated and inspired their children to make aliyah.

The couple lived in Denver until they made aliyah in 1987, splitting their time between Jerusalem and Deerfield Beach, Fla.

Mr. Shames passed away on April 30, 2011.

After her husband’s death, Mrs. Shames continued leading and enjoying the growing Israel-based Shames, Makovsky and Feder clan that today numbers over 300.

Marilyn Shames is survived by her sister Marcia Snyder; children Jay and Gerri Shames, Judy and Doron Kop, David and Robyn Shames and Ari and Haya Shames; 20 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.
