Annelie Sherwood, who escaped with her family to America in 1939, passed away Feb. 28, 2014, in Denver. A service was held March 5. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Annelie found a little bit of joy or blessing in every situation, the family said. She was such an easy person to talk to, and very attentive and interested in what you had to say.
She enjoyed not only connecting with her family but her many friends throughout the years, many of whom she met in a Bnai Brith group in the 1950s. Those friendships endured to the end.
Annelie was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Giessen, Germany, to the late Martha and Rudolf Livingston. Due to restrictions placed on Jews in Germany, she attended a Jewish high school in Cologne.
One day she was at a butcher shop when the SS detained her and several other Jews. Only five feet tall, she looked younger than her age and was released. When her parents heard the story, they decided it was time to leave Germany.
In 1939, they came to Flint, Mich., where a family agreed to sponsor them. Annelie completed high school there.
After moving to Chicago, she continued her love of bowling. Annelie met her future husband Arnold (Arnie) Sherwood at a bowling lane.
They got married one-and-a-half years later, on April 23, 1944, and were together for almost 70 years.
In 1952, the Sherwoods moved to Denver with their young children and Arnie began his pharmacy career. Annelie assisted him with the bookkeeping throughout his career.
She loved her children so much that she could barely reprimand them when they got in trouble, the family said. She took them on picnics in City Park, Washington Park, and to museums.
Annelie and Arnie were avid travelers. Pulling a trailer behind their car, they took many trips with the kids when they were younger. The couple also visited Mexico, Europe, South America, Europe, the Orient and Australia.
She loved making brisket, matzah ball soup and applesauce, picked raspberries and tomatoes from the garden and was addicted to dark chocolate.
In addition to Bnai Brith, she belonged to Temple Sinai.
Annelie is survived by her husband Arnie Sherwood of Denver; children Ron (Kathy) Sherwood of Marietta, Ga., Sandy (Steve) Henton of Neosho, Mo., and Terry (Robert) Vise of Truth or Consequences, NM; grandchildren Ashley (Sean) Basile, Jenna Sherwood, Devin Sherwood, Sarah (Brett) Bowden, Silas and Sally Henton and Tiffany, Brittany and Ryan (Kali) Vise; and great-grandchildren Arianna, Scott, Anna and Alexandria Basile, Dash, Lyric and Cove Bowden, and Jax and Hartley Vise.
