Winter? Over already?

Pardon our lack of excitement or recognition of this past Monday, March 20, being the first official day of spring. For us in the Denver metro area, it’s been spring — nearly summer on some days — for quite some time now.

It seems Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction on Groundhog Day, of six more weeks of winter, didn’t transmit this far west.

Are we the only ones who are missing a good, strand-you-in-the-middle-of-the-road snowstorm? To be sure, we’re not complaining about the lack of back-breaking shoveling, near-miss skids or icy slips. But we do miss that incomparable fresh, snow-is-in-the-air feel.

That’s what March in Colorado is supposed to be about. This time last year — can you recall? — we were wading through knee-high drifts, dodging fallen branches and battling bitter temperatures. We certainly weren’t wearing T-shirts and shorts and picnicking outdoors!

Many natives or residents who have been here long enough are skeptical of all this sunshine and high temps, and still believe that the great winter snowstorm is yet to come. A look at the upcoming forecast, however, shows no such weather system, although we are in for some mixed snow and rain — much needed moisture for our parched lawns and gardens.

Can it be? Is winter — which was barely here — over? Or, will the weather gods play their much loved tricks on us, and will it be a white Passover?
