They also provide the perfect opportunity to study the present, and perhaps to speculate upon the future. Jerusalem, like Israel and the entire Middle East, is far from a simple place or a simple issue. While pride and joy are certainly part of the Jerusalem retrospective triggered by the semi-century milestone — along with lingering sadness, for all the sacrifices that were made — the ramifications of the city’s reunification continue to resonate to this day.
