Wanderlust on hold

January, 2020, as reports of a novel virus in Wuhan, China, galvanized my attention, I booked a mid-April trip to Stockholm, Sweden, for my brother’s milestone birthday. I shared my April plans in person, phone calls and texts — yet I always added the same postscript: “Keep your eye on that virus!” A few days after receiving my email ticket, I began red-inking take-along necessities on a large legal pad. I added four facemasks at the last minute. Sometime in February, I liberated two dusty suitcases locked in storage and wheeled them upstairs.
