If you’re feeling like a zombie lately, don’t worry: It probably has nothing to do with the TV hit “The Walking Dead” or the macabre season that culminates at October’s twilight.
More likely it stems from the fact that this year’s political campaigns have, even more than previous elections, treated us as if we’re brainless automatons, wandering aimlessly in the political wilderness, unable to think beyond one-dimensional slogans or childish name-calling.
Without doubt, this campaign — especially in Colorado, a “purple” state whose US Senate campaign could well decide which party controls that all-important legislative body — has reached unprecedented levels of exorbitant spending, myopic perspective and exaggerated vitriol.
Our point? Don’t let the imbroglio obscure the importance of the election itself.
Despite their simplistic treatment in ads, the issues being discussed in this campaign are both real and serious.
Government spending, education, women’s rights, capital punishment, health care, educational reform and any number of other crucial issues are critical to our democracy and civilization, not to mention — in national elections — such global issues as Iran, Israel, ISIS, Russia, Ukraine and all the rest.
Please vote, for all these reasons. Vote your conscience, your beliefs, your philosophies, your values.
And prove that we’re not zombies after all.
