Verna Dee Nelson Goren, a Denver native and teacher in Chicago for 20 years, passed away Aug. 5, 2010, in Chicago.
Rabbi Batsheva Appel and Cantor Miriam Eskanasy officiated at the Aug. 9 service held at Kam Isaiah Israel Congregation in Chicago. Interment followed at Rosemont Park Cemetery in Chicago. Arrangements were made by Chicago Jewish Funerals.
Verna Dee was a spectacular life partner, said her husband Myron Goren.
Mrs. Goren was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Denver.
A 1947 East High graduate, she received her journalism degree from Northwestern Universitys Medill School of Journalism in 1951.
She married Myron Mike Goren on July 10, 1949, at BMH Synagogue in Denver.
The couple lived in Chicago for 61 years.
Initially staff editor of Hospital Magazine, Mrs. Goren had a 20-year teaching career in Chicago Public Schools.
Mrs. Goren also took advanced courses at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
She retired from teaching in 1999.
Mrs. Goren is survived by her husband Myron Goren of Chicago; sons Bruce Goren of North Dakota and Paul (Gwen MacSai) Goren of Evanston, Ill; grandchildren Ruby, Mose and Kip MacSai-Goren; and sisters Sandy (David) Resnick of Potomac, Md., and Donna (the late Stan) Jacobs of Owings Mill, Md.
She was predeceased by her son Steven D. Goren in 2001.
