This is a developing story and is being updated from Israel, after the conclusion of the Shavuot holiday.
At a joint FBI-Boulder Police Department press conference on Sunday responding to the violent attack on the Boulder’s weekly Run For Their Lives walk, the FBI confirmed that the suspect in custody is Mohamed Sabri Soliman, 45.
He was heard to be yelling “Free Palestine” during the attack. “As a result it is clear that this was a targeted act of violence, FBI is investigating as act of terrorism,” said the special agent in charge.
At the time, he confirmed there were six victims, ranging from 67-88 years of age. Four of them were taken to Boulder Community Hospital. Two victims were airlifted to the burn unit in Aurora. Redfearn said that one is in critical condition. All six were still being treated as of the start of Shavuot on Sunday evening.
On Monday, the victim count was raised to twelve, with the additional victims suffering minor injuries.
Immediately prior to the Shavuot holiday, Rabbi Yisroel Wilhelm, Chabad director at CU, told CBS Colorado that one of the victims is an 88-year-old Holocaust refugee who fled Europe, calling her a “very loving person.” Another victim is a professor at CU, Wilhelm said.
Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn confirmed that the group was targeted by Molotov cocktails and other incendiary devices.
No further information was provided about Soliman. Although there were reports of a second suspect at large, Redfearn said the police department believe that Soliman was the only attacker.
Boulder County District Attorney Michael Daugherty called it a horrific attack and said his office intends to hold the attacker “fully accountable.” Daugherty said he had already spoken to the US attorney’s office and they are united in “Making sure the charges we bring hold the attacker fully accountable.
The FBI is urging anyone who has information or evidence to contact the agency via fbi.gov/boulderattack.
