The bestowal of a lifetime achievement award on Barry and Arlene Hirschfeld by JEWISHcolorado triggers a long and pleasant appreciation at the Intermountain Jewish News. Without the Hirschfelds, there would be no IJN as we know it today — an independent, community-minded, highly awarded journalistic voice.
In 1943, AB Hirschfeld sought an intrepid person to take the helm of the newspaper. It was owned by the Central Jewish Council (forerunner of Jco) and was bleeding the community dry. Hirschfeld found journalist and adman Max Goldberg to take the losing proposition off the community’s hands. The rest, as they say, is history . . . 82 years of it!
Throughout, the Hirschfelds and the IJN have remained close. AB Hirschfeld Press, under Barry Hirschfeld, printed the beautiful color covers on L’Chaim® and on four IJN five-year anniversary magazines. We are grateful for the Hirschfelds’ support in giving us the opportunity to share each family’s legacy of Jewish and communal engagement.
