Tillie Chilk

Tillie ChilkTillie Gamzey Chilk passed away peacefully of old age on Sept. 10, 2011. The service was held Sunday, Sept. 18, at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park Chapel in Burbank, Calif.

She was born on April 28, 1914, to the late Jack and Anna Gamzey.

Her brother, the late Robert Gamzey, was the editor of the Intermountain Jewish News from 1943-1966, and then the first full time Israel correspondent for an American Jewish newspaper.

A North Denver High School graduate, she received her RN in 1935 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

After moving to Los Angeles, Mrs. Chilk earned a BSN in nursing in 1967 from California State-Los Angeles, and an MA in counseling and guidance in 1975 from California State-Northridge.

She worked as a nurse in Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley hospitals. Mrs. Chilk also taught nursing in the RN program at Los Angeles Southwest College and Pacific Coast College following her retirement.

She was married to Joseph Chilk, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Chilk, who traveled extensively with fellow nurses and on Elderhostel excursions, was an avid photographer.

She was active in the local chapter of the American Association of University Women and chaired several divisions.

Involved in music, art, theater and politics, Mrs. Chilk supported liberal causes, the women’s movement and environmental, ecological and humanitarian organizations.

Mrs. Chilk is survived her daughter Laurel Brodsley; grandchildren Ruth Brodsley, Jonathan Clegg and Jonah Michael Chilk; and sons-in-law Daniel Brodsley and Roger Clegg.

She was predeceased by her son Spencer Chilk.
