There is no more rigid, intrusive or tyrannical example of George Orwells portrait of dehumanizing totalitarianism 1984 than Chinas one-child policy. It has corrupted the most private human decision in the most public way. Everything from public instruction, criminal fines and discrimination at work to chilling propaganda posters Mother Earth is too tired to sustain more children invaded the privacy of Chinese couples and shredded moral scruples.
If the stakes were not infinite, we would apply the term poetic justice to the Chinese communisms comeuppance. Its one-child policy has failed. The physical symbol of communism, the Berlin Wall, fell 20 years ago. The anti-spiritual symbol of communism its kleptomaniac robbery of human life has fallen.
This policy not only yielded enforced abortions, childless parents (who lost their one child to disease or accident), and a universal assault on privacy, but a generation of little emperors. These are the chubby, spoiled, siblingless children of the past 30 years. Even worse, this policy threatens Chinas future. What all the economies of the world combined cannot do to China, China is doing to itself. It is creating a gross imbalance in its population, prefiguring an aging population that no work force will be large enough to support.
That is why the people who enforced a Chinese constitutional provision outlawing all but one child per couple in 1978 are beginning to launch a campaign for the opposite. Shanghai is launching an aggressive campaign to encourage more births, reports the Washington Post.
Same control.
Same invasion of privacy.
Same indifference to human dignity.
Same categorization of people strictly by economic worth.
Same immorality.
Just in the opposite direction.
It is criminal that so much of the world, including the US under a liberal president, raises no voice against human rights violations in China. Chinas Big Brother one-child policy or, as now looms, its Big Brother multi-child policy is the most flagrant and egregious example.
