We know were tilting at windmills but wouldnt it be nice if, just once, the UN lived up to its charter and actually tried to enforce peace?
That is, enforce peace instead of serve a purely political, anti-Israel agenda?
Look at the scramble among world leaders, from the USs Obama to Germanys Merkel to both Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress. Everyone is worried to death that the UN next month will declare Palestine a state next month.
Everyone, in other words, is wrapped up in politics, not peace, at the UN.
Syria kills in cold blood her own citizens, day after day, and what does the UN do? So far, nothing.
Israel defends herself against terrorists, and what does the UN do? It debates, wrings its hands, denounces, or passes anti-Israel resolutions, more often than it condemns any other country, for anything.
Israel builds a village somewhere on the West Bank of the Jordan River the UN condemns it as a settlement. However unwise or illegal one might deem this village, or settlement, no one is killed. Yet, here is Syria: mowing down her citizens. In one city after the next. Here is Syria: denying basic democratic rights, such as a true multi-party system, and enforcing the denial by pointing the guns at the protesters at random. And what does the UN do? Dont even waste your breath trying to come up with an answer.
We may be tilting at windmills it may be common knowledge among most citizens in the West it may be a real sleep inducer but it remains important to call out Syria.
Syria facilitates the transfer of massive amounts of armaments from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon armaments that Hezbollah intends to use against Israel.
Syria facilitates the flow of anti-American insurgents into Iraq, who kill American troops.
Syria harbors the leaders of Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations, and has no compunction about these leaders planning terror attacks against Israel, and the abduction of Israelis, such as Gilad Shalit.
Syria seeks her own nuclear weapons program.
Syria seeks to dominate Lebanon.
Syria is in a formal state of war with Israel.
And yet, when Syria turns its guns mercilessly not against Israelis, but against Syrians, we witness a UN that cannot bring itself even to impose sanctions, let alone send peacekeeping troops to Syria.
Remember this the next time the UN drones on with another anti-Israel resolution.
