Talk about a double standard. Nope, we’re not referring to Rubashkin being denied bail, but a senatorial appointment in the making.
A seat’s been left vacant in the US Senate, the result of Hillary being appointed Secretary of State. The two front runners: New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Caroline Kennedy, uh…New York housewife.
And here we are again. It’s a different party, and a different coast, but once again, a woman is attempting to gain a political office for which she is unqualified.
There’s one major difference: Apparently if your name is Kennedy lack of political experience and know-how is unimportant.
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is leading all the polls. But don’t worry, Governor David Paterson is taking the high road, and won’t be “swayed by outside influences.” Thank you, Mr Paterson, for remaining loyal to the true first family of American politics. Even as the new aristos are just days away from taking over the White House, we can count on you not to sideline the Kennedys. Screw democracy. After all, polls are just media manipulation – except of course when predicting the anointing of Obama.
Looks like New Yorkers aren’t keen on putting a soccer mom – oops, Upper East Side philanthropist, our bad, – into the Senate.
Lucky for Mr Paterson this appointment isn’t decided by the pesky people of New York, so the reinstatement of the Democratic machine can finally be fully consolidated.
Thank you, Mr Paterson, for putting the world to rights.

So what’s the real reason Kennedy dropped out? Perhaps it’s cynicism, but what does the term “personal reasons” even mean? Could be the health rumors floating around, could be a desperate attempt to save face, realizing she might not get pick. It could even be that Paterson asked her to step down, due to some potential tax and nanny issues.
Either way, Rocky Mountain Jew wasn’t sad to see her go. Gillibrand might be a no-name, but at least she has experience serving the people of New York.
Come on, and what experience did Hillary Rodham Clinton have? At least Caroline IS from the Upper East Side of NEW YORK!

Actually, though she wasn’t a New Yorker, Hillary Clinton had solid work experience as a lawyer plus was exposed to the highest level of governance for eight years. How does being from the Upper East qualify Kennedy to represent and legislate on behalf of the entire state of New York? One could argue that her being from the Upper East Side is actually more a disqualification, because there’s no way she could relate to the average New York resident.
