Shades of Loch Ness! Apparitions or as some claim, actual sightings of a mermaid on the shores of Kiryat Yam, Israel, are crashing media waves these days. The Haifa suburb is so convinced that a mermaid dwells beneath the sea that it has offered a $1 million reward to anyone who can prove that the mythological half-woman half-fish exists. Findings from an NBC documentary attempting to capture images of the floating aquatic creature are currently being researched by LAs Center for Coastal Ocean Research. Meanwhile, onlookers flock daily to Kiryat Yams beach to catch a glimpse of the hooplas source and possibly nab the reward.
Inhabitants of the 21st century even pragmatic, hard-boiled Israelis require flights of fancy. If any country deserves visions of mermaids gracefully leaping, it is Israel.
So good luck, all ye zealous seekers. But in the rare event that you find the long-tailed lady in question, do not put her in a cage. Send her back unharmed to the world of imagination free at last.
