Sylvia Plotkin, member of a Penny Poker Ladies Group in Denver for over 50 years, passed away April 28, 2013. Rabbis Benjy Last and Ben Greenberg and Cantor Joel Lichterman officiated at the April 30 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Sylvia was a 15-year breast cancer survivor, the family said. She had many friends in the community. Those who had the good fortune to know her referred to her as a sweet lady who was caring and generous.
Her children feel she was the kind of mother every child should have.
Mrs. Plotkin was born Nov. 2, 1923, in The Bronx, NY, and grew up on Denvers West Side. She graduated from North High.
Sylvia Bernstein married Barnett D. Plotkin on Sept. 19, 1943.
The couple moved to Chicago while Mr. Plotkin attended optometry school and then returned to Denver, where they stayed for the remainder of their lives.
Dr. Plotkin died on April 29, 1998.
A homemaker, Mrs. Plotkin was a longtime member of BMH-BJ and was active in Bnai Brith and the Democratic Party.
The IJN profiled Mrs. Plotkin and the Penny Poker Ladies July 2, 2004 in Generations. Young mothers when they started playing on the West Side, they continued into their 80s. Although they limited their bets to nickels and dimes, they were relentless and sweet.
Mrs. Plotkin is survived by her children Dr. Ronald (Nancy) Plotkin of Arizona, Debra (Mel Haller) Plotkin of Denver and Dr. Rhonda Nell (Jeff) of Arizona; and siblings Dr. Lou Bernstein of California, Dr. Herman Bernstein of California, Dr. Jack Bernstein of Arizona and Ruth Bailis of Denver.
