Sylvia Berger

Estes Park resident Sylvia Berger passed away May 28, 2008. She was 88.

“Sylvia was an intelligent and perceptive person,” the family said, “and was a lifelong source of inspiration and strength to her immediate and extended family.”

Ms. Berger was born March 20, 1920, in Palestine, to the late Louis and Rachel Karner.

She grew up in Denver, attended CU and then Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1941.

In 1942, Ms. Berger joined the US Navy Nurse Corps. A lieutenant, she served at Guadalcanal and was awarded the American Area Service Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and the WW II Victory Ribbon.

Following the war, she continued to work as a nurse.

She lived in Aurora and Reno, Nev., before relocating to Estes Park in 2002.

An avid bowler, Ms. Berger also enjoyed playing bridge and bingo and watching baseball. She loved animals and had seven “grandpets.”

She is survived by her children Stephen and wife Toby of Irvine, Calif., and Marcy and husband John of Estes Park; grandson Jason and granddaughters Jaime, Julia and Laura.
