Susan Cohen

Susan “Suzy” Cohen, past treasurer at Rodef Shalom and a successful investment manager in Denver and Arizona, passed away Dec. 1, 2019, in Palm Springs, Calif. She was 76. Rabbi Joe Black and Cantor Elizabeth Sacks officiated at the Dec. 20 memorial service at Temple Emanuel.

Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“Her life exemplified her belief in ‘noblesse oblige,’ the duty of those who were born fortunate to help the less fortunate,” her family said.

Susan Lichterman was born April 23, 1943, in Chicago to George Lichterman and Ruth Goodheart Lichterman. She was raised in California.

She graduated Beverly Hills High School, where she met the love of her life Alan Cohen, and earned an English degree at UC-Berkeley.

The Cohens moved to New Haven, Conn., where Mrs. Cohen had a brief career as a teacher before moving with Alan to Guatemala City, Guatemala. Their sons were born there.

The family lived in Bogota, Columbia, and Arlington, Va., before settling in Denver.

Early in her adult life, Mrs. Cohen was involved in community theater and directed plays in Guatemala and Colombia.

Later she became the first female stockbroker for Merrill Lynch in their Washington, DC, office and went on to have a successful career managing investments for clients in Denver and Tucson, Ariz.

Mrs. Cohen served as treasurer at Rodef Shalom.

She developed an interest in making jewelry later in life but was beset by health problems, which led her to move to a lower altitude in Palm Springs.

Mrs. Cohen is survived by her husband Alan Cohen; her two sons Stephen and Michael (Megan) Cohen; and grandchildren Rachel, Emily, Joshua, Samuel and Joseph.

Grandson Noah Cohen predeceased her.
