
Steven “Steve” Leonard Newman, 75, director of human rights and community relations under Mayor Wellington Webb, passed away Feb. 28, 2021, in Denver. Rabbi Steven Foster officiated at the March 2 graveside service at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Mr. Newman was born June 3, 1945, in New York. He earned his BA at Brooklyn College and MA and PhD at NYU.
He married Audrey Claire Gobetz Newman on Aug. 19, 1973, in Denver. They were together for 44 years until her death in 2017.
Mr. Newman, who worked as a middle school teacher in the New York Public School system, also led two labor unions, CAPE and AFSCME.
A mayoral appointee directing human rights and community relations under Mayor Webb, he became director of Denver Motor Vehicles and then worked for the City and County of Denver’s Dept. of Human Services.
Mr. Newman enjoyed the mountains and spending time with family. He was a Trekkie and a science fiction fan.
Steve Newman is survived by his daughters Meredith (Reginald) Halstead and Leah (Nicholas Gossert) Newman; and grandson Jackson Halstead.
