Steven Chotin

Steven Chotin, founder of The Chotin Group Corp., passed away May 15, 2021, surrounded by his family. Rabbis Yaakov Chaitovsky, Steven Foster and Menachem Lehrfield and Cantor Martin Goldstein officiated at the May 19 in-person graveside service at Mt. Nebo. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“Steven possessed a strong passion for beautiful things: cars, Harley-Davidsons, his extensive pen collection or the latest technical device that came on the market,” his loved ones said.

“But none of these could surpass his love for his family. He was a stern but incredibly loving father and grandfather.”

Mr. Chotin was born in St. Louis to Miriam and Alfred Chotin, the middle child and only son in a family with two daughters.

He graduated from Ladue High School in Ladue, Mo., and briefly attended the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Chotin moved to Denver in 1972 to reorganize a company owned by a family friend, who also knew his soon-to-be wife, Robin Cohen.

The couple met shortly after he arrived in Denver and were married in 1974 at BMH.

Mr. Chotin worked for MDC holdings. As a member of the board, he played a primary role in developing their mortgage banking business.

In 1984, he founded The Chotin Group Corp., which invested in structured financial products and real estate opportunities. He was instrumental in creating mortgage-backed securities.

Mr. Chotin was a supporter of social and political causes in the Denver Jewish community, the US and Israel.

He and his wife established The Chotin Foundation to improve the lives of individuals, children and families. Although his particular interest was the Jewish community, he helped charitable initiatives in the areas of arts and culture, education and health.

A star football player in high school, Mr. Chotin later developed a passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and rode with the close-knit group Jewish Urban Bikers for years.

Steven Chotin is survived by his wife Robin Chotin; children Mauri (Scott) Zemachson, Whitney (Chad) Wolz and Ross (Karyn) Chotin; sister Phyllis Chotin; and grandchildren Jaxon, Caden, Coco, Harper, Crew, Cole and Parker.

Donations may be made to JEWISHcolorado, National Jewish Health, Shalom Park, JFS or the American Transplant Foundation.
