Stanley Jay Skip Oliner, a Denver native and lifelong resident widely known for his skills and experience as a historical archivist, passed away Jan. 15, 2012. A final service is scheduled to take place next summer at the Jewish cemetery in Leadville.
A native of Denvers West Side, he was 73.
For many years, Mr. Oliner was curator of books and manuscripts at the Colorado Historical Society, a position in which he was frequently consulted by authors, historians, individuals seeking genealogical information and members of the media.
With his almost encyclopedic knowledge of early Colorado family, governmental and social history, he was also an expert on the states Jewish history and frequently assisted writers at the Intermountain Jewish News when they were researching material for historical articles.
After his retirement from the Colorado Historical Society, Mr. Oliner did private consulting and sold historical materials on the Internet.
He was a longtime member of the Hebrew Educational Alliance and a 57-year member and past president of the National Amateur Press Assn.
At the Utah State Historical Society, a photograph collection which Mr. Oliner collected and organized from portions of the photo archives of the Denver Post is named in his honor.
Mr. Oliner is survived by his sister Fern; daughters Michelle and Stephanie; and grandchildren Jacque, Ari and Paul.
The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Colorado Historical Society, 1200 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203.
