Sol Biderman

Sol Biderman, a journalist for Time Magazine who covered some of the most important events of the 20th century, died January 14, 2018, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, surrounded by his loving family. He was buried next to his beloved wife Maria Camargo Biderman.

Sol Biderman was born Nov. 10, 1936, in Dallas, Texas, to Barney and Annie Biderman. Along with his brother Sid Biderman, he grew up on the West Side of Denver.

He attended Cheltenham, Lake Junior and North High School, and cultivated numerous lifelong friendships in Denver.

Sol graduated from CU, where he was involved in campus activities, majored in journalism and Spanish and edited the Colorado Daily.

He won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and NEA scholarship that enabled him to spend one student year each in Brazil and Argentina.

He later earned his MA and PhD and was a professor of literature at the University of Sao Paulo with his wife Maria.

A longtime journalist, reporter and editor of the Latin American Daily Post in Sao Paulo, Sol was a Latin American correspondent for Time for over 20 years.

In Cuba when Fidel Castro returned to the country, he used his Colorado Daily press pass to accompany Castro on his first speaking tour throughout Cuba.

He later met with Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara in Uruguay and covered Pope John Paul II’s trip to Sao Paulo for Time.

Sol was the lead national reporter in Sao Paulo when the drowned body of the notorious Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele was discovered.

He authored the novel Bring Me to the Banqueting House and wrote two comedic plays: “When Elvis Met Che in Denver” and “The Beatification of Carmen Miranda.”

His niece Karen Biderman had a lead acting role in the LA performance of “When Elvis Met Che in Denver.”

Sol Biderman is survived by his daughter Rachel Biderman (Fernando Furriela) of Sao Paulo and son Raphael (Rosangela) Biderman of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Ana and Maria Clara Furriela, twins Gabriel and Julia Biderman and Isabella Biderman; brother Sid Biderman of Denver; and niece Karen Biderman and nephew Mark Biderman of Denver.
