Shimon Peres and 9,000 students in the world’s largest online civics class.Israeli President Shimon Peres and 9,000 students recently broke the Guinness world record for the largest online civics class.

The class connected Amal High School students across Israel via Cisco Systems Telepresence technology.

“I’m proud of the students who broke this record,” said Peres. “It was a privilege to be their teacher.”

Guinness World Records Senior VP Marco Frigatti said that Guinness “immediately liked this new record idea because it combines civics, technology and a teacher who has witnessed his country’s development from its origins to today.”

The class was delivered from the Cisco Systems headquarters and broadcast live to classrooms using Telepresence technology.

At the beginning of the class, Cisco Systems Israel CEO Boaz Maoz said: “Cisco Israel, at the initiative of its chairperson and CEO John Chambers, has been working closely with the Israeli government over the past year-and-a-half in the fields of education, healthcare, infrastructure, communications and cyber.

“The initiative aims to boost economic growth and reduce inequality gaps using technology and communication. The class will be broadcast using the most advanced technology which will bring leading experts to every classroom in Israel.”

Following Peres’ talk, he interacted with pupils in Tel Aviv, Beersheba and Kuseifa.
