Sharsheret, JEWISHcolorado launch collaboration to address women’s cancers

Rochelle ShoretzSharsheret, the national organization supporting women and their families of all Jewish backgrounds facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer, and JEWISHcolorado’s Jewish Women’s Philanthropy Committee (JWPC), are collaborting to raise awareness about breast and ovarian cancer.

The organizations will work together to create tailored support programs for Colorado residents living with or at risk for these diseases.

The new program, “Sharsheret SupportsTM JEWISHcolorado,” is the first collaboration between the national cancer organization and a member of the national Jewish federation system.

Sharsheret Supports JEWISHcolorado will offer culturally relevant, Denver-based breast cancer programs, support services, resources and events.

JEWISHcolorado, along with Sharsheret, conducted a brief community-wide survey to assess local needs in the Denver area.

Upcoming programming will include community-wide Pink ShabbatsTM and participation in national educational webinars and teleconferences.

“Since the launch of Sharsheret Supports in 2007, Sharsheret has partnered with more than 30 local Jewish organizations and cancer organizations nationwide,” said Director of Operations Elana Silber.

“We are proud to establish this significant partnership with JEWISHcolorado, and look forward to working together to continue to bring outstanding programming to the Denver community, which spans a growing network of Sharsheret volunteers and supporters.”

Sharsheret Supports JEWISHcolorado was developed in response to community-wide interest in local breast cancer and ovarian cancer programming.

In November, 2013, Sharsheret founder and executive director Rochelle Shoretz addressed an audience of more than 1,100 women at Choices to announce the partnership.

“I’ve met a number of cancer survivors here tonight, and I hope that each and every one of you reaches out to join our Sharsheret, our chain of support.

“It is only as strong as each of its links — every one of you,” Shoretz said.

“Breast cancer is a major issue that has a unique Jewish connection,” said JEWISHcolorado President and CEO, Doug Seserman. “It is a difficult subject and a story that is often left untold. We’re hoping to serve as a local resource for the Colorado Jewish community that can provide a secure support network for women and families facing these cancers.”
