Shabbat in Gibraltar

is an anomalous place — and its citizens a reflection of its unique character. It is a British overseas territory, and has been since the 18th century, but it sits at the tip of Spain. It has been in Spanish as well as African hands and the result is a culture that’s an unusual fusion. From its rooftops, one can see Morocco’s Atlas Mountains as well as the bay of Algeciras in Spain — all while spying red telephone boxes dotting its few streets.
