Seniors put the ‘social’ in the wellness at Shalom Park

Bobbie SesermanWater walking club? Exercising at age 95? Progressing from getting around with a walker to just a cane?

All of this and more is taking place at Shalom Cares’ J. Leonard Levy Family Wellness Center, located on the Shalom Park Campus, where seniors are becoming more active in their body and mind.

Bobbie Seserman, a six-year patio home resident of Shalom Park, can be found all over the campus attending Shabbat dinners, discussing the latest books in book club, and playing bridge. But at least three days a week, she is at the wellness center, taking full advantage of the facilities.

“The pool is the most wonderful pool I’ve ever been in because of the 92 degree temperature. There are no chills to the body upon entering the water. It just feels good.”

Or as Seserman describes in Yiddish, a “mechiah.”

In the water, she’ll kick her legs, in every direction, just like an etrog and lulav during Sukkot.

“I can do things I wouldn’t normally do because I don’t feel as much intensity. Exercise is not as difficult in the water,” explains Seserman.

She is not the only one taking advantage of the thermoneutral, zero entry access pool. There is a team of water walkers that come rain or shine, snow or sleet.

Cindy Luebke, wellness center director, has always taught fitness and enjoys seeing the seniors remain active.

“I love teaching exercise and seeing others become stronger and remain independent longer. This generation didn’t exercise in a gym.”
