Sandy Stein, a dynamic and highly accomplished woman, passed away July 26, 2017, in Pueblo after a courageous 14-month battle with cancer. Per her wishes, there was no service or celebration of life. Montgomery & Steward made the arrangements.

“I shared 53 years with Sandy and could happily share 53 more,” her husband Marvin Stein said. “She was Sandy until the very end.”

Mrs. Stein was born Sept. 23, 1942, in Tucson, Ariz., to the late Norman and Rhoda Hayutin Fuchs and graduated West High School in Tucson.

In 1964, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from CU-Boulder, where she was named one of the five outstanding women in her class.

She married Pueblo native Marvin Stein in 1964 and moved to Pueblo.

Involved in more than 40 local, state and national organizations, Mrs. Stein improved the lives of countless people.

She was most recently active in the Pueblo Arts Center, Parkview Hospital Foundation, Heart Association, the Pueblo Infant Center, PAWS, CSU-Pueblo Presidents Club, Student Leadership advisory board and the Rosemont Museum Auxiliary.

Mrs. Stein’s past roles included board vice president and Sisterhood president, Temple Emanuel, Pueblo; vice president, Hadassah; board president, the Broadway Theater League; board president, the Newcomers Club of Pueblo; president, the Junior League; president, the Pueblo Symphony board; founding member, Rosemont Museum Auxiliary.

Social columnist at the Pueblo Chieftain for 26 years, she left after the newspaper cut the position.

Among Mrs. Stein’s numerous honors are CU’s Community Service Award, 1975; Pueblo County Outstanding Volunteer, 1975; Sangre de Cristo Trustee of Distinction; Southern Colorado Press Club’s Community Service Award; CU’s Distinguished Service Award; and CSU-Pueblo’s Outstanding American Achievement Award, 2000.

She was inducted into the Pueblo Hall of Fame in 2001 and named Outstanding Woman during Women’s History Week in 2002.

The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce honored Mrs. Stein as Pueblo’s Citizen of the Year in 2017, and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado honored her this summer.

“You read the resumé of Sandy Stein [and] you will see the obvious — she is educated, talented and has received many awards in the past for all she has given in time, talent and treasure,” outgoing Pueblo Chamber chair Elizabeth Gallegos said when Stein was named Citizen of the Year.

“What you will not see are the countless calls, handwritten notes, visits . . . the quick hand on our arm to say a few words of encouragement.”

Mrs. Stein is survived by her husband Marvin Stein of Pueblo; brother Henry Fuchs; children Shari (Andy) Munitz and Mindy (David) Carton; and grandchildren Jazz Munitz, Melody Munitz, Emerson Carton, Holden Carton and Harper Carton.
