Restaurant for sale: $1.00

In 1943, the late Max Goldberg bought this newspaper for $1. In operation since 1913, the newspaper had struggled financially as an organ of the Central Jewish Council under the auspices of various editors and publishers. It was now bleeding the Council. Would Goldberg take it off their hands for $1.00? He did, and soon took in his partner Robert Gamzey (with whom he shared the exact same birth date). They took a risk. Seventy-four years later, the Intermountain Jewish News continues to thrive, and next year we mark our 105th anniversary.

This came to mind when we saw a headline in last Friday’s Denver Post: “Restaurant for sale: $1.” According to the article, Steamboat Springs’ oldest downtown bar and restaurant, Cantina, is listed for sale at the same price that a plate of huevos rancheros cost there in 1974.

Is there an intrepid Max Goldberg in Steamboat willing to take the risk? In 2091, tune in to find out.
