Reopening schools amidst a pandemic

well-worn phrase “back to school” — an inescapable part of our late summer ritual — might not be totally accurate in this strange year of 2020. In a week or two, most kids will be going to school, true, but not “back” to it, in the sense of returning to something familiar. The ebb and flow of the coronavirus pandemic are playing havoc with education, no less than they have with virtually every other dimension of society, and little these days can be taken for granted. Will students be returning to the buildings they attended before the pandemic surfaced last spring or will they learn their lessons at home in front of a computer? Or both?
