Redeeming your clunkers

Nearly 700,000 Americans cashed in on the Cash for Clunkers program, resulting in great bargains on new cars for them and reduced inventories for auto dealers. The economic jury is still out, but some car dealerships have regained their footing and a lot of buyers are happy.

Now what if we could trade in our emotional clunkers for something more positive? We’ve all got problems that require way too much fuel to sustain: uncontrolled anger, blind intolerance, leaking compassion, steaming self-hatred, out-of-whack attitudes, hearts attuned to ourselves alone. We run on fumes, looking for the nearest substance to clean us out –– until the fumes return.

The High Holidays are an opportunity for a spiritual tune-up, oil change, overdue cleansing. The possibility of renewal is here. And on this one, the jury’s in.
