Rabbi Yehoshua Gutman, principal of the Yeshiva Toras Chaim high school for 31 years, passed away Oct. 11, 2008, in Lakewood, NJ. He was 64.
The crowded service, held Oct. 12 at Khal Lev Avrohom in Lakewood, was officiated by Rabbis Yerucham Olshin, the dean of the Lakewood Yeshiva; Pesach Krohn, a noted author; Kalman Krohn; and Mendel Slamowitz.
Rabbi Gutmans sons Yehuda and Avraham also spoke.
Interment followed at Washington Cemetery in Deans, NJ.
Rabbi Gutman was born in Baltimore and graduated from Beth Medrash Govoha, the Lakewood Yeshiva.
While in Denver, he also taught at Beth Jacob High School.
After serving as principal of Yeshiva Toras Chaim, he taught at Orthodox girls schools in Brooklyn.
Rabbi Gutman became the spiritual leader of Lev Avrohom in Lakewood seven years ago.
The family said that former students maintained their connection to Rabbi Gutman throughout the years.
They sought his counsel and advice. He was their mentor.
He is remembered for a natural enthusiasm and optimism, and an ability to connect with teenagers and motivate them.
Rabbi Gutman is survived by his wife Yitty Gutman; children Avraham, Yehuda and Chana; and many grandchildren.
