Rabbi Paul Laderman

Rabbi Paul LadermanAt press time, the Intermountain Jewish News was informed that Rabbi Paul Laderman, formerly of Denver, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, in Jerusalem. He was 81.

He was the son of the late Rabbi Manuel Laderman and Bess Laderman. Manuel Laderman was spiritual leader of the Hebrew Educational Alliance for 47 years.

The service took place Monday, Sept. 21, 5 p.m., at the Etz Hayim cemetery near Beit Shemesh in Israel.

““Last night, my father, my Abba, Rabbi Paul Laderman left this world,”” his daughter Ilana Laderman Mushkin wrote on Facebook. ““He left behind a world immensely brighter for having been a part of it — for the light of wisdom, kindness and guidance he shared with thousands around the world.”

“That world “is so much dimmer because the source of the great light he radiated is now extinguished,”” she wrote.

“”We are comforted because his light is now reflected in the gems he left behind in family, friends, students and the community that benefited from his energy for over 81 years.””

Rabbi Laderman was ordained at Yeshiva University in 1960.

A US Air Force Chaplain from 1960-1962, he was the rabbi at Beth Jacob Congregation in Oakland, Calif., 1964-1971.

He served as director of the Hillel Foundation at UC-Berkeley, 1971-1973.

Rabbi Laderman, who made aliyah in 1973, was a contributing writer for Ha’aretz.

Due to Yom Kippur, the official shiva concluded Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The Ladermans were scheduled to receive condolence visits on Thursday and Friday at their home in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Laderman is survived by his wife Shula; children Ilana (Tzachi) Mushkin, Ze’ev (Noga) Laderman and Rafi (Chani) Laderman; sister Mierle (Jack) Ukeles; grandchildren Keren (Doron) Kuperman, Eitan Mushkin, Shimiri Mushkin, Rori Mushkin, Yonaton Manuel Laderman, Daniel Laderman, Milka Shumer, Elkana Shumer, Mayan Laderman and Aviah Tirzah Laderman.

Shalom & Erev tov…Reb Paul z”l was my teacher and mentor 1971/1972…and, from him, I received my Shtar giur. One of the rabbis who signed it was Reb Mayer Goldberg (1890-1992) who had studied with Rav Kook, and lived with his family in Jaffa in 1913-1914. One of his fellow students was Hillel Pearlman, the ‘Monsieur Chouchani’ who, later, tutored Reb Elie Wiesel. Reb Paul’s impact on my entire life continues. He was a tzaddik.
