Rabbi Black of Emanuel projects ‘portals of entry’

Joseph R. Black has just started his eighth year as senior rabbi of Temple Emanuel. With a membership of 2,012 households, it is the largest synagogue in the Rocky Mountain West. That translates to nearly 5,000 people. Yet, Rabbi Black and his team at Emanuel have found ways to meet those myriad needs and create an intimate relationship with as many of those thousands of congregants as possible. Rabbi Black’s strategy is to pay close attention to the “multiple portals of entry” that Temple Emanuel offers its congregants as they seek to fulfill their Jewish needs in a congregational setting.
