Want to know the cause of the chaos in Egypt? And you thought it was the Muslim Brotherhood, or former President Mohammad Morsi, or his terrible economic track record; or the Egyptian military or old-line supporters of Hosni Mubarak or the general disillusion among the original supporters of the “Arab Spring.” Silly you. It was none of these actors. It was, of course, Israel.
Take it from the prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He told a meeting of the provincial chairs of his ruling AKP party that Israel was involved in the July 3 overthrow of Morsi.
Erdogan has evidence! He knows! Because, you see, he cited a statement by a French intellectual whom he said is Jewish, and who told Israel’s justice minister during a visit to France in 2011, “The Muslim Brotherhood will not be in power even if they win the elections. Because democracy is not the ballot box.” As in, the ballot box that elected Hitler.
With the type of hallucinatory, malicious, anti-Semitic non-evidence that Erdogan bases his views on, we are surprised he hasn’t blamed Israel for global warming and earthquakes, not to mention poisoning the wells.
