Passing the torch

A moment of meaning and continuity occurred at the annual meeting of the ADL earlier this week. Karen Steinhauser stepped into the shoes as chair of the Mountain States region. Of course, change in leadership takes place regularly in synagogues and community organizations. It takes place once every two years at the ADL. In this case, however, Steinhauser stepped into the shoes of Steinhauser.

Karen Steinhauser’s father was the director of the ADL for 28 years, during the heyday of civil rights and Catholic-Jewish dialogue. Sheldon Steinhauser put the ADL on the map in Denver. Now his daughter assumes the lay leadership position. She brings her own strengths, particularly in the law, to the ADL.

The passing of the torch was a source of great pride for the family, and a statement of multigenerational commitment that speaks for the stability that our community hopes for.

P.S. Watching from the audience was a Bar Mitzvah, a Steinhauser grandson and son — might a third ADL generation be in the offing? No pressure…
