Pardon me!

Whether an uncovered sneeze or egregious action is at fault, ‘tis the season to be sorry. Some of us habitually apologize, even in the absence of wrongdoing. Others routinely inflict pain without uttering the words that would mean so much.

What is a good Jew to do?

Eradicate negative behavior. Stop saying you’re sorry because you feel responsible for every ill in the world. And if you realize you’ve hurt someone, please do say you’re sorry and ask for forgiveness. Finally, if you sneezed on a congregant or two during services, start serving the chicken soup — just the way they like it.
