Longtime Denver resident David Bershof passed away on September 24, 2024, at the age of 86. A service was held on September 26 at Temple Emanuel, with interment at Emanuel Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Steven Foster and Cantor Elizabeth Sacks.
Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Mr. Bershof, born on October 20, 1937 in Joplin, Mo., moved with his family to Denver in his early youth. He attended Steck Elementary, Gove Jr. High and East High School. He attended CU and DU for one year each, then went into business with his father at Mid-Continent Wholesale.
Mid-Continent was sold in the 1980s, and Mr. Bershof became founder of Smoker Friendly stores. He was on many boards and several organizations in the community, and was an avid golfer.
In May, 1978, Cindy and David Bershof were married at Green Gables Country Club.
“It felt like we were always newly married,” said Mrs. Bershof.
“David embodied kindness in every interaction and saw the beauty of our common humanity,” said Mrs. Bershof. “His legacy is one of compassion – a heart open to all, regardless of differences.
“He showed us that no matter the challenges we face, kindness can always guide us toward unity.”
Survivors are Mr. Bershof’s wife Cindy; children Joel (Nora) Bershof, Juli (Ken) Kramer, Jill (Greg) Svenson and Jennifer (Kevin) Gregory; and step-children Lori Carter and Daniel Wilde; sister Joan (Larry) Rubenstein; sisters-in-law Peggy Pepper and DeeAnn Goetz; grandchildren Addison (Daniel) Sheldon, Preston Kramer, Alec, Aidan and Alex Svenson, Adam and Samantha Poche, Reed and Graham Carter and Camden and Marlie Cohen; great-grandchild Sterling and former daughter-in-law Minna Castillo.
