Stephen Cohen
Denver native Stephen “Steve” Cohen passed away on Feb. 19, 2023, at the age of 82. A service was held on Feb. 22 at Emanuel Cemetery, officiated Rabbi Steven Foster, Rabbi Joe Black and Cantor Elizabeth Sacks. Feldman Mortuary, which Mr. Cohen led for 25 years, handled the arrangements.
Feldman Mortuary was founded by the deceased’s grandparents in 1936.
Mr. Cohen, born on March 14, 1940, grew up in the Hilltop neighborhood and attended Steck Elementary, Gove Middle School and East High School. Graduating six months early from high school, Mr. Cohen entered the US Army. Following his military service he attended CU Boulder; after graduation he returned to Denver to enter the family business.
Assessing that he was not yet ready to become part of the funeral business, Mr. Cohen and his then-wife Jill moved to St. Louis, where he worked in the furniture manufacturing business for 15 years.
In 1980, Mr. Cohen returned to Denver to take over Feldman Mortuary, which was founded by Mr. Cohen’s grandparents in 1936.
“He strived to provide the perfect memorial experience for the family,” said Mr. Cohen’s son Jim, who now oversees the family business. “And by perfect, I mean perfect.
“No mistake was OK with him. He was always on the family’s side. When scheduling with rabbis or cemeteries, the family’s preference was always priority number one.”
In 2005, Mr. Cohen reduced his role at Feldman.
“He became more and more connected to and interested in his sons’ lives, his daughters-in-law, and his adoring grandchildren,” his family said. “He was an incredibly devoted son, an incredible brother, a loving and involved father and caring grandfather.
Survivors are wife Cheryl, whom Mr. Cohen married in 1994; sons Jim (Alissa) Cohen and Mark (Wendy) Cohen; sister Margey (Gary) Cheses; and grandchildren Asher, Shana, Eva and Harley.

Mrs. Green was a lifelong volunteer at nursing homes, hospitals and Jewish day schools in New York and Colorado.
