Irwin Gart
Denver native and member of the venerable Gart Brothers Sporting Company, Irwin “Bill” Gart passed away on February 12, 2023. He was 91. A service was held on February 16 at Temple Emanuel, officiated by Rabbi Emily Hyatt, followed by internment at Golden Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary handled the arrangements.
Born on March 11, 1931, Mr. Gart was the son of Goldie and George Gart, and attended Cheltenham Elementary School. Cheltenham remained an important part of Mr. Gart’s life, as he planned several reunions over the years. Mr. Gart also attended Lake Junior High School and then New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, before attending DU.
A member of the US Army from 1954 to 1956, Mr. Gart was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. In December, 1959, he and Donna Gart were married; they were a couple for 63 years before Mr. Gart’s passing.
Mr. Gart’s business career began in 1956 as part of the Gart Brothers Sporting Company. In 1971, he and his family moved to Dallas, where Mr. Gart became the vice president of store operations for the Zales Corporation. He later became vice president at Resistol Hat Company before running his own sporting goods and apparel businesses in 1992.
In 2013 he was appointed to the Senior Affairs Commission of Dallas.
“His loved ones remain inspired by Bill’s abiding dedication to his pursuit, commitments and community,” his family said.
Survivors are Mr. Gart’s wife Donna; children Gennifer and Julie; and grandchildren Brandon (Yael) Kaufman and Marissa Kaufman.
Contributions can be made to a Go Fund Me, with proceeds to Cheltenham Elementary School.
Sheldon Fertman
Longtime Denver resident Sheldon Fertman passed away on March 18, 2023. He was 88. No service is planned.
A native of Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Fertman was a DU graduate with a degree in business. In June, 1956, he married Roberta Simon; they were a couple until Mrs. Fertman’s death in August, 2003.
Mr. Fertman worked for the Mile High Beauty School as a barber and cosmetologist. He also worked in insurance and office equipment sales.
“In early adulthood Sheldon shared his passion of travel and experiencing different cultures with his wife Roberta and his children,” Mr. Fertman’s family said. “In his later years Sheldon and Evelyn Whisman also loved to cruise and take long walks at the Denver Botanic Gardens.”
Mr. Fertman was a member of Columbine Lodge #147, A.F. & A. M.
Survivors are children Alison Taren, Jay (Lisa) Fertman and Kathy (Erin) Ash; grandchildren Shoshana (Todd Snyder) Dietrich, Kira (Kevin) Connors, Ari Dietrich, Alexia (Adrian Rogstad) Ash, Kylie Ash, Chaz Byrne, Arielle Fertman and Kayla Fertman; sister Sherry (Warren) Rubin; and nieces and nephews Debra (Scott) Clamp, Michelle (Jay) Lewis and Stuart (Stephanie) Rubin.
Mr. Fertman is also mourned by Evelyn Whisman.
Carol Arenberg
Carol Arenberg died on January 8, 2023, at the age of 79. A service was held on January 13, 2023 at Emanuel Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Sara Gilbert. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisc., Ms. Arenberg was managing editor of The Bridge, a publication of the National Academy of Engineering, until her retirement in 2011.
Ms. Arenberg obtained her bachelor’s degree in English literature and master’s in comparative literature, both from the University of Michigan. She received her PhD from Washington University in comparative literature in 1979.
Ms. Arenberg was married to Dr. Irving Kaufman Arenberg from 1963 to 1990. Their family arrived in Denver in 1980.
“Carol was a wonderfully kind and loving woman,” her family said. “She loved reading crossword puzzles, traveling, hiking, art, and most of all spending time with her family.”
Survivors are children Dan (Diane) Arenberg, Julie Arenberg and Mike (Gail) Arenberg; brother Rick (Gayle) Rakita; and grandchildren Zach, Joel, Mitch, Jake, Nick and Alison Arenberg and Nathan Bierer. Ms. Arenberg is also mourned by John Burdick.
