Dr. Jerry Weil

Holocaust survivor and US Air Force veteran Dr. Jerry Weil passed away on June 17, 2023, at the age of 91. A service was held on June 20 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Sarah Shulman. A celebration of life is being planned for July. Feldman Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Dr. Weil was a fixture and well known for his commitment to public service in Greeley, where he and his wife Nancy settled after his US Air Force service concluded in 1962. A pathologist at Weld County General Hospital (later the North Colorado Medical Center) in Greeley, Dr. Weil led the hospital’s clinical pathology lab until his retirement in 1995.

Born on June 28, 1931 in Baden-Baden, Germany, Dr. Weil’s family fled from Nazi oppression and settled in Minneapolis, Minn. Dr. Weil studied at CU Boulder for his bachelor’s and medical degrees. While in school he met Nancy Shapiro; they were married in 1955 and remained a couple until his passing.

A former president of Beth Israel Synagogue, Dr. Weil served as the chair of the Office of Economic Opportunity in Weld County. He was a fundraiser for the Montfort Children’s Clinic and was on the board of the Greeley Philharmonic.

After retirement Dr. Weil committed himself to promote early childhood reading programs; he initiated a program through the Greeley Rotary for volunteers to read to children at two area elementary schools.

“He served as an example, inspiration and role model in his love of learning, dedication to service to the community and his humanity and humility in all he did,” his family said.

Survivors are Dr. Weil’s wife Nancy; children Carla (Warner Marshall) Weil, David (Miriam) Weil and Lisa (Steve Zansberg) Weil; and grandchildren Rachel (Brian Howell) Weil, Lani Weil, Max Coleman, Gabe Zansberg and Ari Zansberg.
